I spent some time drawing in the SCAD Fashion museum in Atlanta and on the 5th floor deck overlooking midtown. The exhibit was draped clothing. It was interesting seeing all the different examples of draping fashion. I used a water soluble pencil in the galleries and then added watercolor afterwards. For the city view IContinue reading “Sketching at SCAD”

The Falling Leaves
…drift by the window I look forward to autumn for many reasons but one of them is looking closely at the fallen leaves. The variety of color, line and pattern never get old. Each leaf is unique and amazing. I enjoy trying to capture the exact colors and markings on a fallen leaf. I placedContinue reading “The Falling Leaves”
Digital Sketches
I used my i-pad between 2011 and 2013 to make drawings. This device is now out of date but I’m saving the portrait and figure drawings. I made drawings at live model sessions and some from watching tv news and debates. Some of the faces are recognizable.
Art Show Recap
The Art in the Garden event turned out really great. The night before a big storm came along and brought lots of rain and wind but also much cooler temperatures. On Saturday we set up in Todd’s amazing garden using easels, trellises, tables and places on his fence. The artwork was nestled among the hostas,Continue reading “Art Show Recap”

Block Printing at the Studio
The studio is open but we aren’t having a party this year. I decided to do a block printing project and also to have open studio hours when I will be working on the printing. So far I have completed 3/4 of the prints. I’m doing a reduction print which means that after I carveContinue reading “Block Printing at the Studio”
Reworking and playing with a motif
I completed a number of drawings of fresh or dried sunflowers. In order to push the work in a different direction, away from solely observational drawing, I used a variety of media (watercolor, marker, mixed media) on top of the drawing or I cut up the images and rearranged. These works feel more personal, moreContinue reading “Reworking and playing with a motif”
Sunflowers II
As the sunflowers age the leaves and petals curl into interesting shapes. I’m using a bamboo handle and sumi ink. It’s really not possible to get the ink to flow smoothly so the line has lots of variation in size and tone.
Sunflowers
I love both fresh and dried sunflowers. Of course the model for both is Van Gogh’s drawings and paintings. I did one drawing in pen and ink using one freshly cut flower and two somewhat dried flowers. Then I used a paint program to add some color. I’m still working on ideas about how toContinue reading “Sunflowers”
Figure Drawing and Painting
I’ve been revisiting figure drawing this fall by attending sessions with live models. Working from the figure has always been a good challenge. I’m trying both drawing and painting medias. All of these images are from long poses and some are focused on portraiture.
Antietam
This summer I traveled by bicycle to the Antietam National Battlefield in Maryland. I was struck by the tragedy of the battle: over 23,000 soldiers killed in one day on September 17, 1862. Neither side claimed victory. President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation five days after the battle. We had lunch in the town ofContinue reading “Antietam”
Wharf Drawings
These two works were done primarily from life but also touched up back in the studio. I did the wharf picture on site using colored pencil and watercolor. I redrew it on toned paper that night, using my sketch and photo references. I was really interested in getting the geometry of the buildings and theContinue reading “Wharf Drawings”
